Details about area Masivul Postavaru si Paraul Rece

Highlights: Postavaru Massif is the home of two well-known crags of Brasov Region: the classic Cheile Rasnoavei crag and the newly opened Postavaru crag.

Climbing: Cheile Rasnoavei is about 10km far from Rasnov town, on the West of the Postavaru Massif. The landscape is very attractive and lots of tourists visit the area especially during summer. The routes have a character in-between sport and alpine climbing. Most climbs are multi-pitched. The rock is limestone, featuring face climbing, cracks and overhangs. From Cheile Rasnoavei, going upstream in less than 15 minutes we reach Postavaru crag, one of the newest climbing crags in Romania. With more than 100 routes, this crag has it all: balance face climbing, wide or narrow cracks, overhangs and roofs, pocketed or smooth faces. You will have lots of routes to choose from, especially if you look for unclimbed projects. The routes range from very easy to very hard.

Getting here: Starting from Brasov go by car on the national road DN73 following signs for Pitesti. Cross through the town of Rasnov and several hundred meters after you exit the town, follow the secondary road DN73A towards Bucharest, via Paraul Rece. After a few kilometres, you'll see signs to Cheile Rasnoavei. Follow this country road (marked with red triangle) until you reach a barrier. Take care because this country road has several junctions and you must keep the main road. Before the barrier there is a small parking place where you can park your car (45 minutes drive). Keep walking on the country road that leads you into Cheile Rasnoavei (10 minutes walk).

Accommodation: You can camp in a tent or stay overnight at one of the many chalets in the area.

Where to eat: There are several options when it comes to decide where to eat. To reach the closest restaurants, from Cheile Rasnoavei drive back on the country road towards DN73A. Just before to reach the junction with DN73A, on your left side there are several good restaurants. If you are in a mood for a longer drive, we recommend Rosenau restaurant in Rasnov. Another option is to drive towards Paraul Rece resort and enjoy one of the many restaurants in the village.

What to see: The town of Rasnov represents a wonderful destination, being sitated in the middle of an important tourist region of Romania. Around Rasnov, at almost equal distances we find Poiana Brasov resort (9 km), the city of Brasov (12 km), Dracula's Castle - Bran (12 km), Predeal resort and the city of Zarnesti (12 km). The Rasnov Peasant Fortress (dated in 1335) awaits your visit, being open for public on weekdays and also on weekends. The Fortress is the host for event like The Fortress Sound (folkloric festival) and The Comedian's Court (medieval feast). Another historic monument of Rasnov is The Evanghelic Church (The Saxons Church) build at the beginning of the XIV century that has St. Matei as patron of the church. The Old Romanian Church was build in 1384 and has St. Nicolae as patron of the church. Colti Cheii (Rasnoavei's Gorge) represents the ideal place for alpine climbing, horseback riding and bungee jumping. The Equestrian Festival, that takes place every year in May, gathers the most valuable horses from Romania in Rasnov.

Where to buy gear: The most known climbing gear stores in the area are in Brasov: Himalaya and Explorer on Republicii Street and Sport Virus on George Baritiu Street. You can reach all of them from the Brasov's old town centre, Piata Sfatului in no more than 5 minutes walking.

Climate: The ideal season for climbing in Postavaru is from May until September. The crags have Southern or South-Western exposure with ideal condition for climbing. Early in spring you may find water infiltrations on some of the routes. The average summer temperature is between 22 and 27 degrees Celsius. The rainiest month is June. During winter time, because of the alpine climate specific to the mountain areas, climbing in open air is rarely possible and only if the weather conditions are favourable: dry weather, sun and no wind.
